Home » How to measure & fit your Doodles Harness

When it comes to ensuring your dog’s safety and comfort during walks, a dog harness is an indispensable accessory. Unlike traditional collars that can put strain on a dog’s neck and throat, a harness evenly distributes pressure across the body, enhancing the walking experience for both you and your furry companion. A harness not only provides better control but also helps prevent injuries, minimises pulling, and ensures a safer outing for dogs of all sizes and ages.

The Doodles Harness stands out with its silk-lined material designed to reduce friction, which helps prevent the natural knots and tangles that can occur from frequent harness use. In addition to minimising knots and tangles, its sleek and stylish design covers less area on your dog’s chest and back, further decreasing the chances of tangling compared to standard harnesses.

This guide will assist you in selecting the right size harness for your dog. Choosing the appropriate harness size is crucial, particularly for daily use! A harness that is too small can be constricting and uncomfortable, while one that is too large may allow your dog to slip out easily. Achieving a perfect fit will guarantee enjoyable walks for your dog and give you peace of mind knowing that your pooch is both comfortable and secure

To find the right size for any harness, you’ll need two key measurements. These are:
– Neck circumference
– Chest girth
You can use a soft measuring tape, ruler, or string to take these measurements. You can also use your dog’s collar as a guideline for the ideal collar size of the coat.

Neck
Chest

To get the correct NECK CIRCUMFERENCE, measure all the way round your dog’s mext, as above picture shows. Use the same method you would to fit a collar on your dog and ensure you leave enough space as you would for a collar too (about 2 fingers worth) Next, to get the CHEST GIRTH, measure from the broadest part of your dog’s chest (near the armpits) as above picture.

It is important to measure your dog first and then refer to the sizing guide provided to ensure you find the right fit. If your dog’s measurements vary between sizes, please choose the larger size. The Doodles Harness can be adjusted via the easy-adjust sliders on the chest and body to ensure a comfortable fit.

If you are new to using a harness on a dog, it is important to know that not all dogs will find it easy to have something placed over their head straight away – especially if they are not use to it. Therefore, we encourage you to understand how to get your dog used to wearing a harness.

Before you consider putting the harness on your dog, begin by placing it on the floor. This straightforward step gives your dog the opportunity to sniff and investigate this captivating new item at their own pace. Praising them and giving them a treat when they are near or close to the harness will give them positive reinforcement that this harness is not harmful, and they associate it with positive experiences.

  1. Start by unbuckling all buckles. Then, place your dog’s head through the hole all the way down to the base of the neck. If your dog is new at this and uneasy, tease their nose and head through the hole by using a treat on the other side for them to follow. Ensure that the side with the handle is on the back and that the harness is the right side up with the Doodles & Mikki logo on the outside.
  1. Flatten the harness across the back and let the front side dangle in front of the chest.
  1. Place the chest side of the harness across the chest and down towards your dog’s stomach, past the front legs and armpits, so it lays flat on the underside of their chest
  1. The buckles on the underside of your dog can then individually be brought up around the side of your dog’s chest, behind their armpits and front legs, and then buckled into the top side of the harness which is laying flat on your dog’s back. Wait to hear a click to ensure they are both securely fastened.
  1. To adjust the harness to ensure a comfortable and safe fit, use the easy-slide adjusters found on both the front and side. Ensure it is snug, but has enough room to fit at least two fingers in. These adjusters can be easily used when your Doodles hair grows in between salon grooms.
